Japanese Tea Garden

Wabi is aesthetic term which, like sabi represents a pleasurable response to austerity, simplicity, and even poverty. suggesting a reverence for simplistic aesthetics that have withstood the test of time. A Zen Garden is Wabi.

Typically a Zen Garden is made of sand and stone  without water or vegetation.  These were often found outside Buddhist Temples.  The simplicity of the garden with the minimalistic features was intended to impart enlightenment through contemplation.  However, not all Zen Gardens were Buddhist.

Some Zen Gardens contain a minimal amount of vegetation such as this garden found at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens.  Often these gardens were located approaching a Japanese Tea House and came to be known as  Japanese Tea Garden.
